My Essential Question: Why should people like me decide to pursue a healthcare career and choose the right one?
I personally chose this question because it relates to me. I want to know more about why is it important to choose a healthcare career. I know that healthcare is a very important field to go into. The only bad thing is that more people are needed. So I want others to know that healthcare workers are necessary, and why they are important. The answer to this question excites me because its going to give me more reasons to be a nurse. I know that I want to become a nurse, but I want to know how much I will be helping others. This reflects a desire to make sure that I know that this career is suited for me.
My New Essential Question: How can I modify my caffeine intake and communicate others about the effects of caffeine on health?

My Mentorship
Every single day at the Guilford Immediate Care is busy. The thing that is very unique is that you never expect what is going to be the problem. My mentors and I have been seeing different kinds of symptoms each time that I go. The regular routine that happens is a patient signs in at the front desk. The paperwork gets done at the front desk with the receptionist. The receptionist comes to the nurses station to give the paperwork for the patient to be seen. I always wait diligently waiting for patients to check in. The nurses have to check if there is a room available. I am trying to memorized where each room and their number by which they are known. Then my mentors call the patients from the waiting room. You never know who to expect once you call their name. The patient is weighed and is taken vital signs by me. The patient is taken to a room and be asked various questions. Then we leave the patient alone in the room to wait for the doctor. I am glad that I get to learned new things every time I go.
My General Medicine class that I took my sophomore year is the class that changed my life. I didn’t know much about healthcare science. I knew that I wanted to go into the field when I took a career personality test. Health Care was my top choice, and the class helped me understanding more about specific careers. I knew that I wanted to be some type of nurse but not a specific one. I know more about basic things that go on in the healthcare field.

Social Intelligence
There are several challenges that youths face in the workplace. The biggest problem that teens have nowadays is communication. They can't have a serious conversation with an adult. Youths don't have the gut to have a conversation over the phone instead they prefer a text. Another issue is not concentrating on the job or daydreaming about other things. The biggest problem is always wanting to be on their phones. They are always forgetting to have a good impression. I have made a large improvement on not doing any of these. I am always reminding my self to be my best and always have a good impression.Social intelligence is the ability to maintain sociability but remaining professional. This is very important because helps people have a better understanding how important something is. This makes a person realize the reality of things that are happening in the workplace. One thing that is very important and I always like to do is make a good impression. I always try to be my best especially in my mentorship.

Mentorship
My name is Josselyne and I want to be become a nurse someday. I am mentoring with a program at my school. My dream career is to be a nurse to help people. The idea of being a nurse came from having the feeling of helping someone. Everyone has a health that they need to take care. Most people know how to treat basic health issues, but sometimes people need professional help. I chose this profession to be able to be looked up to. I don’t want a career that will not bring benefit to me only. I want a career that will help people in general.
I am mentoring at the Guildford Clinic. I have about 6 or more mentors. They all have different schedules because of their personal needs. I sometimes go once or twice a week because of my school schedule. The people that work there help me understand the basic things to know. There is a great amount of information needed to know, but I am learning slowly. I am always asking questions about the things that they have, and why they do certain things. I always go inside the clinic and go to the nurse’s station. That is where I spend most of the time observing the employees. When patients come in the clinic, I get to help with taking their vital signs. I take their temperature and pulse rate. I also get to listen to the patients symptoms and concerns. There are times when I am lucky and get to hear the diagnosis from the doctor.
I plan to apply to the mentorship program, and mentor again. I want to keep learning from my career. I am reaching my goals by actually getting the full experience of my career. I am actually seeing my career for a couple of hours. The thing that is helping me is that this is a small ER and a regular clinic. I am getting two experiences in one.

Learning
At the beginning of the mentorship it was really awkward for both the workers and myself. The employees didn’t know how to handle the first times we met. After getting used to me and getting to know each other it was more easier to learn from them. The relationship that I have with the workers makes me more confident about what I am learning. The thing that is surprising to me is that the clinic sees about 50 patients a day. The clinic works as a small ER and uses only one doctor/nurse practitioner to see the patients. The workers are able to work 12 hour shifts.
I can improve my performances by asking questions. I am always asking questions and researching about basic knowledge to know. I know that by doing, and learning from my mistakes will take further. I also feel that by not being afraid of doing basic things. I know that you have to start from the bottom in order to achieve greatness. I absolutely enjoy my mentorship and feel that this is the experience that I needed. The program is letting me have a taste of the real world.

Partner in my Education
The goal that I have met so far is seeing my dream career in action. I never thought that reading about a career is very different than seeing it in action. The thing that I have gained from my mentorship is getting the details of the workplace. There are so many things that are not written about a career. The only way to find out is by actually shadowing the career. Another goal is actually getting to interact with patients. I really like the feeling of helping someone with their health as a career. I haven’t changed any of my goals until now. I am hoping that the more time that I spend at my mentorship there will more goals to accomplish.
The career that I want to pursue mostly depends on the patients. There are some times that the clinic is very busy, and there are others that is slow paced. The regular routine is to call patients to take their vital signs. Then ask them various helpful questions about their health. After that the doctor gets to take a look at them, and decide what is wrong. The nurse/assistant then puts all of the information into a database. The patient has to wait if they have a prescription to be sent to the pharmacy. The final step is to discharge the patient. The only part of the job that is sometimes boring is when there are not many patients. There are times in a while that you need a break though and the boring time is the resting time.

My Mentorship
I have been experiencing many things at the clinic. I want to explain various things that happen in the clinic. The following are the office politics, dress, and personal skills. As to any workplace there are ups and downs that are needed to be address.
The clinic has everything needed to function as a small ER. There is a lot of difference between the protocol of a regular doctor's office and the clinic. The nurses always have to get
approval from the doctor to do specific treatments. The nurses are not allowed to do any treatment without a doctor or a nurse practitioner being there. There are specific rules that are given to the nurses, and must be followed. There is a lot of communication within the nurses, but not the doctors. The doctors tend to be in their office doing their work. The doctors are always in charged of the nurses. They are the ones that tend to have everything under control. Everyone has to communicate in the clinic to be able to get things done. I have communication with the nurses only.
I was told that you could only wear solid scrubs. I have been wearing scrubs that would be appropriate for the workplace. I know that their are some of the workers that wear business casual. They are the ones that don’t see patients. Everyone else wears scrubs. There are some that tend to wear a t-shirt or scrubs that are different in color. I haven’t seen them wear a uniform that is the consistent for all workers. They do have a scrub that have the name of the clinic, but they don’t wear it every time. They don’t wear name tags or anything telling patients who they are. I know that it would be better for them to have some sort of name badge. That would help patients know who they are talking to. I think that they should have some sort of uniform to wear consistently. I like that you pick your colors, but it should be more of a color coded workplace. I think that it would be more professional to have a consistent uniform not just solid scrubs.
I have had to apply all of the skills that I have learned in my health care classes. I know there are still some skills that I need to work at. Much of nursing is all skill based, and having interactions with patients. There are some skills that are basic to know in any workplace like communication and respect. I am very thankful to be in the clinic, and to have the opportunity to learn from each and everyone of them.

Week 3
Growing Leaders is a blog post by Tim Elmore. One of his post talks about a summer internship that one of his friends told him about. His friend told him about 6 college students that were interning at his business. They were suppose to be there for 3 months. His experience with them wasn't very delightful. Something that is very important that Elmore mentions is the adults role in the life's of these college students. These college students were supposed to be guided by the adults around them, but in this case they failed too. Elmore talks about 4 attitudes that he looks for in an intern. Teachability, initiative, responsibility, and energy are the top qualities of an intern. One thing that is going to change is that an intern is a interview.

I actually want to leave a good impression with my mentors. I don't want them to remember me as a piece of gum being stuck on their shoes. I want to learned from them. The things that I can do at my mentorship is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I know that my generation that different aspects of things, but my parents have told me to always follow their generation. I know that if my mentors want me to follow them, and actually get hands on experience. I will do as I am told to do. I also want to be responsible on every task I do. I also want to always tell them the truth. My first day at my mentorship I was scared and nervous. I didn't know what to do, but after clinic got fuller. I actually got to follow a nurse around, and she let me do some hands on experience. I will do my best, and never let my mentors down. I don't want them to feel that they are wasting there time. I also want them to be open with me, and tell me what I am doing wrong. I can't wait to go to my mentorship.
I found that this article helped me with the four attitudes needed to make a good impression. One things that was something that I need to keep in mind is that this is my interview. I will have to always keep in mind those for attitudes, and apply them at my mentorship. One thing that was very applicable to me was learn and pay attention. The most important thing that I got from this article is to always do my best. I will be paying more attention to my attitude and never let my mentors down.

Week 1
The Honors Mentorship Program will help me explore my career choice in depth. I will do everything that is in my power to learn from this experience. I will take notes and always follow directions. This will help in my future, by giving me the chance of exploring the real world. I think that something that is key to the future is exploring new things. The number one thing that is very important is the first impression. I think that everything that was said on the Podcast and the document are very important. The most important aspect of life is always making yourself presentable. The main ideas of both of the documents were to remind us about how important is to be polite. One thing that can change a person is a smile on their face. This will be a great journey in my life that will help me in so many ways.
